Formed originally in 1974 and first led by vocalist John Foxx as Ultravox!, the band released three albums for Island Records before Foxx’s departure in 1979. Replaced by Midge Ure following a successful collaboration with keyboardist Billy Currie for Steve Strange’s Visage in early 1980, writing their hit single ‘Fade To Grey’. Ure revitalised the band, steering it towards commercial success whilst pioneering the New Wave, New Romantic and Synthpop movements.
Signing to Chrysalis Records at the start of the 80s, Ultravox went from strength to strength securing five Top 10 LPs and 16 Top 40 singles in the UK. Hits include ‘Vienna’, ‘Hymn’, ‘Dancing With Tears In My Eyes’ and ‘Love’s Great Adventure’.
In 2008 Chrysalis Records overhauled the band’s catalogue releasing digitally remastered editions of all their albums, with a second CD featuring B-Sides, live and previously unreleased material. The group reformed and a sold-out UK tour soon followed, reaffirming Ultravox’s status as leading artists of their generation. Once the tour had concluded a live film and CD entitled ‘Return To Eden’ was released with the band undertaking more dates across Europe.
In 2012 the band released ‘Brilliant’ their 11th album and first batch of new material since 1986. A full European tour came after, running from 2012 to 2013 and culminating in a special guest performance alongside Simple Minds on their 2013 arena tour.
